The most important quality in any judge is a profound commitment to fairness. This means allowing for a full and transparent presentation of the facts, and fair treatment to all under the law, no matter who you are.
Outstanding judges respect the process and work to build public trust in the justice system. This requires integrity and independence.
Texas has many different types of courts, and the process and the public are better served when judges understand and have experience in the kind of law their court deals with, whether appellate, civil or criminal.
Public service as a judge can mean more than making rulings and presiding over court proceedings. Many Democratic judges in Dallas County have launched innovative programs and initiatives: diversion programs that reduce repeat offenses; efforts to increase jury participation and the diversity of the jury pool; changes to court rules to educate about implicit bias; technology and efficiency measures that keep cases moving; and much more. Democratic judges are dedicated to making the system as strong and as fair as possible.
